Judge Joel M. Cohen - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Joel M. Cohen is an Acting Justice of the New York County Supreme Court, Commercial Division. He was designated to the Supreme Court bench in 2018 by the Hon. Lawrence K. Marks, Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York. Prior to this, Justice Cohen was appointed to the New York State Court of Claims by Governor Andrew Cuomo during that same year.

He graduated with his B.A. in economics from Binghamton University in 1983. Cohen went on to earn his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1986.

Outside of the bench, Cohen spent the bulk of his legal career with the law firm Davis, Polk, and Wardwell LLP. He first joined Davis Polk as an associate in 1987 and was later named a partner at the firm in 1996. During his tenure as a commercial litigator at Davis Polk, Cohen served as co-head of its global litigation department. He also specialized in domestic and international arbitration and government investigations specifically in the areas of antitrust, securities fraud, mergers and acquisitions, false advertising, and commercial contracts. Cohen remained with the firm until his appointment to the Court of Claims in 2018.

Before joining Davis Polk, Cohen served a year-long clerkship for the Hon. Thomas A. Clark with the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit beginning in 1986.

Justice Cohen has served as a member of the Georgetown Law Alumni Board, the Harpur Law Alumni Council, and the Whippoorwill Foundation.

Cohen has also co-authored several legal articles for the American Bar Association (ABA) and served on the ABA’s Antitrust Law Developments editorial board in 1997.

He is a native of Brooklyn, New York.
