Download Hon. Buchwald ReportThe Hon. Gerald J. Buchwald is a judge for the Superior Court of San Mateo County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2005, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Judith Whitmer.
Buchwald earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Northwestern University in 1970. He then continued his studies at Northwestern University School of Law, completing a J.D. in 1973.
He began his legal career as a law clerk for Chief Justice Donald R. Wright of the California Supreme Court in 1973. The following year, he joined McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen, where he worked as an associate for two years. Then, in 1976, he moved to Severson & Werson. He practiced there for twenty-two years, eventually leaving to join Ropers, Majeski, Kohn, and Bentley as a partner in 1999. Over the course of his legal career, he handled commercial and business cases, construction litigation, professional liability cases, and insurance coverage matters.
Buchwald was born and raised in San Francisco. As a fourth generation San Franciscan, he spent his childhood working in the bakery supply company owned and operated by his family since 1913.
He is registered as a Republican.
