Overview

The Hon. Clifford T. Blakely, Jr., is a judge for the Alameda County Superior Court in California[1]. Blakely was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown on January 2, 2019, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Gloria F. Rhynes[2].

While on the bench, Blakely has served in the court's General Criminal Division[1].

Educational background

Blakely earned a B.A. in economics from the University of Southern California in 1992. At the University of Southern California Gould School of Law, he completed a J.D. in 1995. He was admitted to the State Bar of California (1995)[1].

Career history

After graduating from law school, Blakely began his legal career as a deputy public defender with the Alameda County Public Defender's Office in 1996. He continued in that capacity until 2007. Blakely then opened the Law Offices of Clifford Blakely (2007 to 2014), a solo law practice in Sacramento, California[1]. In 2014, he returned to the Alameda County Public Defender's Office and remained there until his appointment to the bench.

Personal life

Blakely was born in South Korea during his father's service in the U.S. Air Force[1]. Later, during his years in Sacramento, his father worked as a process server for the district attorney's office[1]. Blakely is registered as a Democrat[3].
