Factual Background

This is a defamation action. The First Amended Complaint (“FAC”) alleges as follows.

Plaintiff Joe Becker (“Becker”) was an employee of Defendant Hollywood Storage Management, LLC (“Storage”). Defendant Jehlam Sundher (“Sundher”) was Storage’s Managing Partner. Sundher accused Becker of committing a burglary at Storage. (FAC ¶ 1.) Sundher also made several defamatory statements to various persons, including that Becker “hit one of his kids” and that Becker was a “criminal,” “liar,” “thief” and “manipulator.” (Id.)

Additionally, Sundher allegedly ordered Becker to perform illegal or despicable acts over the course of his employment at Storage. (FAC ¶ 3.) On
