Biography

Hon. Thomas E. Prince is a judge for the Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals (Office 5, Division 1). He was appointed to the bench by Governor Kevin Stitt on December 18, 2020, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Kenneth Buettner (Ret.).

At the time of his appointment, Prince was a district judge for the Oklahoma County District Court in the Seventh Judicial District. He joined its bench in 2012. During his tenure there, he presided over civil and criminal jury trials and served as the Presiding Judge for the State Muti-County Grand Jury for two years (2016 to 2018). During that same time, Prince was elected by his peers in Oklahoma and Canadian Counties to act as Vice-Presiding Judge for the Seventh Judicial Administrative District (2016 to 2018) and was elected Presiding Judge the following year.

Before joining the bench, he was a former administrative law judge for the Oklahoma Merit Protection Commission, the Oklahoma State Department of Health, and the Construction Industries Board. Prince was also in private practice for twenty-nine years. His practice included the Prince Law Office, P.C. (1997 to 2012) and York & Slater (1990 to 1997).

He received a B.S. in political science from Southern Arkansas University in 1979. Prince went on to complete a J.D. at Oklahoma City University School of Law in 1982. He was admitted to practice in Oklahoma (1982), the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma (1982), and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma (1982).

Prince received gubernatorial appointments to the Oklahoma State Election Board, where he was a member from 1999 to 2012. He was also a past president of the Oklahoma Judges’ Association (2013 to 2015) and a board member of the Oklahoma County Law Library Board of Trustees.

Prince has sat on the Oklahoma Judicial Conference Legislative Committee.
