Judge Robert A. Greenberg: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

The Hon. Robert A. Greenberg (Ret.) is a senior judge for the Montgomery County Circuit Court in Maryland. Greenberg was appointed to the bench by former Governor Robert Ehrlich on January 11, 2006. He retired on August 30, 2021.

Greenberg has held assignments as the Circuit Administrative Judge for the Sixth Judicial Circuit and the County Administrative Judge for the Montgomery County Circuit Court (2017 to 2021). He also sat on the Maryland Commission on Judicial Disabilities, the Montgomery County Criminal Justice Coordinating Commission, and the Equal Justice Committee of the Maryland Judicial Council.

Prior to his appointment, Greenberg was an attorney in private practice, handling criminal defense matters for twenty-two years.

Greenberg earned a bachelor’s degree in American studies from Washington College in 1974. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1978. As a law student, Greenberg served on the University of Baltimore Law Review.

After graduating from law school, Greenberg began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Plummer M. Shearin of the Montgomery County Circuit Court. He served in that capacity until 1980, at which time he became an assistant state’s attorney with the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.

His memberships have included the Maryland State Bar Association, the Montgomery County Bar Association, and the Montgomery County American Inn of Court. He also sat on the Board of Directors of the Montgomery School Safety Committee.

He is a recipient of the Anselm Sodaro Judicial Civility Award (2015) and the Annual Community Outreach Award (2012) from the Maryland State Bar Association (2015).

Born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Greenberg was raised in Montgomery County, Maryland, where he attended Wheaton High School.
