Biography

The Hon. Matthew York is a judge for the King County District Court in Washington. He was appointed to the bench by the Metropolitan King County Council in 2017.


York earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1999. He then completed a J.D. at Willamette University College of Law in 2002.


After graduating from law school, York began his legal career as a deputy prosecuting attorney for the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. He served in that capacity until 2010, at which time he joined the Office of the Seattle City Attorney. During his tenure as an assistant city attorney, he held assignments as a DUI and traffic safety prosecutor as well as a lead precinct liaison attorney.


York was raised in Southern Nevada by a single mother with four children. He paid for his college education by working at a movie theater. He also managed a sandwich shop and worked as a clerk at 7-11 and as a road maintenance worker for Clark County.
