Judge Ferris W. Wharton - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Ferris W. Wharton is a judge for the New Castle County Superior Court in Delaware. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jack Markell on June 5, 2014.

Wharton earned a B.A. from the University of Delaware in 1974. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Illinois College of Law in 1978.

After graduating from law school, Wharton entered into private practice. Two years later, he joined the Attorney General’s Office for the State of Delaware, where he spent the next two decades serving as a deputy attorney general. During his tenure there, he supervised the Rape Response Unit, the Drug Unit, and the Felony Trial Unit. Then, in 2003, he became an Assistant United States Attorney in the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Delaware.

Wharton returned to private practice in 2006. He briefly worked as an attorney at Fox Rothschild before joining the Office of the Public Defender for the State of Delaware as an assistant public defender in 2008. He worked in that capacity until his appointment to the bench.

His memberships have included the Board of Directors of Neighborhood House and the Board of Managers of Downtown Wilmington YMCA. He has also served as a volunteer fundraiser for Campaign for Kids as well as an in-school mentor for Martin Luther King Elementary School.

He is registered as a Republican.
