Judge Carl J. Schuman: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Hon. Carl J. Schuman is a judge for the Waterbury Judicial District Superior Court in Connecticut. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor John Rowland in 1998.

During his judicial tenure, Schuman has held assignments in the New Britain, Windham, Hartford, Waterbury, and Danbury Judicial Districts. In New Britain, he was the presiding judge of the Administrative Appeals and Tax Session. Schuman also presided over the Middletown Juvenile Court and the Complex Civil Litigation Docket in Waterbury.

Prior to joining the bench, he worked as an assistant state attorney general and an assistant state’s attorney.

Schuman was also a former adjunct lecturer at the University of Connecticut.

He received an A.B. from Harvard University. Schuman went on to complete a J.D. at Duke University School of Law. He was admitted to practice in Connecticut in 1979.

Schuman served as chair of the Connecticut Public Service and Trust Commission’s Jury Committee, Voir Dire Subcommittee.

He is the author of the “Connecticut Criminal Procedure.”
