Judge Bruce E. Schroeder - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Bruce E. Schroeder is a judge for the Kenosha County Circuit Court in Wisconsin. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Tony Earl in 1983, filling a vacancy created by the passing of the Hon. John E. Malloy.

Schroeder has received national attention over the course of his judicial career. In 1987, he made headlines after mandating HIV/AIDS testing for all convicted sex workers, and in 2021, he returned to the spotlight due to his role as the presiding judge for the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from Marquette University in 1967. He then completed a J.D. at Marquette University Law School in 1970.

After graduating from law school, Schroeder joined the Kenosha County District Attorney’s Office. He started as an assistant district attorney, rising through the ranks to become the District Attorney of Kenosha County in 1972. Then, in 1977, he entered into private practice.

His memberships have included the German American Society.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Schroeder was active in politics with the Democratic Party of Wisconsin in the 1970s. He and his wife, Donna, have two adopted children.
