Vondcrgrit of Goldberg, Persky, Jennings & White : FC in February of 1994. The sample was sent for microscopic examination of its s Sample Description : : MVA#E0258 - Durabla Sheet Gasket 4 Sample Preparation and Analysis Twe (2) sections of the gasket were cut with razor blades. One was mounted flat for analysis by scanning electron microscopy. The other was mounted so that the outer edge of the sample as received could be examined. A piece of the gasket was aiso cut with a pair of shears and mounted so that the freshly cut édge could be examined. The: samples were coated with gold as.a conductive coating for the scanning electron microscope analyses. The samples were examined in a JEOL Mode! 6400 scanning electron microscope equipped with a Noran Voyager x-ray analysis system. Resuits Ghiysotile asbestos fibers Were seen protruding from the surface of the gasket material. See figures in Appendix.A. Although most of the asbestos fiber is bound in the gasket material, asbestos fibers protrude fram the flat surfaces and are available to be released from the gasket upon'rubbing or abrasion. Chrysotile asbestos fibers were also seen protruding from the edges of the gasket as originally received and as cut with a pair of shears. ‘The edge of the gasket as originally received appeared to ‘have been cut by a knife. The asbestos fibers were protruding mostly from one side of the edge, The edge produced by the pair of shears showed most fibers protruding from the certter of the cross-section. - « O:PROJECTS:0805;RPTO310APPENDIX A Scanning Electron Microscopy Images D:PROJECTS:0805:RPTO310 Page 2: Figure A1. The guide is placad over diametrically apposite bolts to center the gasket properly. Style D Gaskets prevent eccentric assembly. Style D Gaskets are manufactured to nominal original thickness of .175". Optimum compression is in the range of 125" to .138". Compression in this range provides ample STYLE D SELF-CENTERING GASKETS bonding load within stress limits for specified bolting. Style © Gaskets should be used in the lower prassure/ temperature ranges, For more stringent service conditions, Style CG or CG1 Gaskets with their greater safety features are recommended. Style O Gaskets are recommended for all pipe sizes up to and including 24” for 150, 300, and 400 psi fittings, and up to and including 8” for BOO psi fittings.€ STYLE R GASKETS For ANS! B16.5 Male & Female and Tongue & Groove Flanges Style R Gaskets are specifically designed for use with ANSt B16.5 male & feraie and tongue & groove flange facings. Gasket dimensions are directly related to the dimensions of standard flanges and provide adequate clear ances for ease of assembly. Standard Style R Gaskets embody all the exclusive features ‘of Flexitallic design for keeping compression values in balance with bolting and sroviding adequate resifiency to ‘compensate for variable stresses encountered in service. Standard Styie R Gaskets are manufactured to 2 nominal thickness of .125°. Optimum compression is in the range of 090" to .100” compressed thickness. ‘There are three types of Sty¢ R Gaskets: a} Style R-1 indicates geskets designed for use with large mate & female flanges. ~ b} Style R-3 indicates those designed for use with large tongue & groove flanges. c}) Style R-4 indicates gaskets designed for use with smail tongue & groove flanges. As a generat rule, the use of Flexitaic Spirat-Wound Gaskets with smait mate & femats flange facings is not recommended. Stytes R-1 and R-3 Gaskets are identical in afi nominal pipe sizes through the 1500 psi series. They are listed separately for convenience. It is not agcessary, however, to duplicate inventories. Style R-1 Gaskets in the 2600 psi series have smatier 1.D, dimensions than Style R-3 Gaskets and as a When Gaskets [f resuit they are not interchangeable in the 2506 psi series. Style R-4 Gaskets are constructed to maximum density in the 800 psi series, Dimensional limitations established by the proportions of the small tongue & groove facings limit the possibility ef increasing gasket dimensions to improve the load carrying capacity in the higher pressure series. For this reason, it is suggested that large tongue & groove facings be selected for new construction when 900, 1500, and 2500 psi flanges ate to be used. tt is not necessary to duplicate inventories of Style R-4 Gaskets beyond the 600 psi range. Style R-4 in the 600 psi series will be compressed an additional amount when exposed to the higher bolt loads, ‘but not to the degree that the gasket will be crushed due to the radial support provided by the confining groove. Like other standard Flexitaltic Gaskets, Styles 8-1, R-3, and fd are manufactured in Type 304 stainless steel and Canadian asbestos. They are available on special order in any combination of metals and filiers listed on page 7. Special Style R Gaskets are adaptable to non-standard fittings and can be designed and manufactured according to specifications for high and low pressure applications and for severe corrosive conditions. For Boiler Manhole Cover Assembiies Styles M and MC Gaskets are specifically designed for Mandard manhole cover assemblies. Selection of required design is made in accordance with service conditions. The widespread use of Styles M and MC Gaskets as original equipment and replacement parts is the result of coordinated Flexitaltic design and research with equipment engineering and design to meat specific requirements. Each design of manhole gaskets provides for adequate compression factors in keeping with the defined limits of service pressure ratings. Styles M and MC Gaskets inchide designs to compensate for rough er worn seating surfaces and to facilitate centering of gaskets during assembly. Fiexitaltic manhole gasket construction includes modified compression values to provide for seating joads within the normal range of manhole cover assemblies and to compensate for related operating loads within yield limits of the gasket body. Style M Oval Gaskets are manufactured with thicknesses of L175" and .250° and with flange widths shown in table on the facing page. Style M Round Gaskets are manufactured with a thickness of 175" anty. Gaskets having a thickness of 250" are recommended for gasket seating surfaces which have become pitted or warped. Style MC Gaskets, an exclusive Flexitallic design, are manufactured with a thickness of .250" and flange width af 13/18". A preformed spiralwound centering ring, having a thickness of .175", is snapped into the inner groove of the gasket proper. The centering guide permits the gasket proper to assume its correct. position and to compensate for inequality in plate contours and fillets in caid-pressed plates. Shouldering and pinching caused by radial misplacement are also eliminated. Standard Styles M and MC Gaskets are available in the following three ranges of operating pressure for practically all makes of boifers and auxiliary equipment: a) 0-499 ths. b} 0-999 Ibs. 8} {G00 ths. and above. Standard Styles M and MC Gaskets are manufactured with low carbon plated steel and Canadian asbestos filler and Type 304 stainless steal and Canadian asbestos filler for all ranges of operating pressure, Low carbon plated steef is satisfactory for all operating pressures whare saturated steam temperatures are not In excess of SOO°F, Although this type of steel is subject to a normal rate of corrosion, it does not in any way-affect the sealing qualities of the gasket. The extremely long service-life and resistance to sorrosion warrant the slightly higher cost of Type 304 stainless steel for use in boilers operating at less than SOO°F. Type 304 stainless steel “Ig recammended for temperatures in excess of 500° F. Ordering Manhole Gaskets Standard Styies M and MC Gaskets can be ordered from the tabie on the facing page. STYLE T GASKETS For Boiler Handhole and Tubecap Assemblies Style T Gaskets for boiler handhole and tubecap assemblies have been recognized for their superiarity since 4912. The quality and safety of Fiexitattic Style T Gaskets are the result of unceasing effort to develop a series of gaskets which will maintain a perfect seal at a minimum maintenance cost. Styfe T Gaskets require no compounds and can frequently be reused if not removed fram cover assembles during outage. This economy is due to the exclusive feature of spiralwound construction and resiliency which permit the gaskets to rebound when they are not under compression. The consistently high standard of performance in Style T Gaskets is the direct result of Fiexitallic engineering vision in anticipating design improvements of modern steam gen- erating equipment. Style T Gaskets, in thicknesses of 126" and .175", are recognized for the following design factors: a} High safety factor in keeping with specific operating conditions. fb} Compression values and bending loads proportioned te safe stresses of cover assembiles. ¢} Resiliency under concentrated and ftuctuating loads. a} Exceptionally long and sustained service. a} Reduction of seat cleaning ime. Style T Gasket yield values are calculated for specific ranges ‘of operating pressure to compensate for highly concentrated gasket loads, The compression characteristics are related to the gasket constructions which vary with the ranges of operating pressure for practically ail makes of beiters and auxiliary equipment: a} 0-499 Ibs. b} 0-999 tbs. ¢}. 1000 Ibs. and above. Installation: See. instruction tags attached to each bundie of gaskets supplied. . Standard Style T Gaskets are manufactured with plated low carbon steei and Canadian asbestos filler and Type 304 stainless steel and Canadian asbestos filler for afl ranges af operating pressure. | Low carbon plated steal continues to serve well in a majority of applications where saturated temperatures are not in excess of 500° F. Although this type ‘of steel is subject to a normal rate of corrosion it does not in any way affect the seating qualities of the gasket. Type 304 stainiess steel possesses ideal corrosion resistant qualities and is recommanded for superheat temperature. The extremely jong servica life and resistance to corrosion warrant the slightly higher cast to Type 304 stainiess steel for use in boilers operating at less than 500° F. The use of stainless steel gaskets also reduces the time required for cleaning gasket seat surfaces. Style T Gaskets are also manufactured with other types of stainless stee! and alloys and are recommended when corrosive acid, alkaline or other conditions warrant their use. Gasket fillers other than Canadian asbestos can be furnished in combination with any metal according to specifications for chemical processes where the we of such materials is indicated. See page 7 for listing of metals and fillers. Standard Style T Gaskets are manufactured to nominal original thicknesses of .175" and .125". Each thickness possesses design characteristics compatible to the design of handhole and tubecap assemblies. Special gaskets having thickness of .250" are recommended for use in assemblies having relatively broad seating surfaces and where bonding joads are low. Gaskets having @ thickness of «125° are designed for use with assemblies having extremely narrow seating surfaces and where high banding loads are encounter- ed. Several handhole and tubecap assembly designs permit the use of either thickness. Standard Style T Gaskets can be ordered from the tables on pages 23 and 24. Type and number 3° threads on bolt. 3. Material of bolt. 4, Condition of mut czaring surtaces. 5. Lubrication of bo!: threads and nut bearing surfaces. The tables below reflect the results of many tests to determine the relation between torque and bolt stress. Values are based on steel bolting welt lubricated with a heavy graphite and oil mixture. It was found that a non-lubricated boit has an effi- ciency of about 50 percent of a well jubricated bolt and also that different lubricants produce results varying between the limits of 50 and 100 percent of the tabulated stress figures.
