Judge William S. Pocan - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. William S. Pocan is a judge for the Milwaukee County Circuit Court in the First Judicial District of Wisconsin. He was appointed to the bench in by former Governor Jim Doyle in 2006, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Michael P. Sullivan (Ret.).

Pocan has served as Deputy Chief Judge of the Milwaukee County Circuit Court and held an assignment in the Family Division.

Prior to his appointment, he was an associate at Jastroch & LaBarge in Waukesha (1985 to 2006). Before that, Pocan handled family and bankruptcy law as an associate at Brookhouse & Brookhouse (1984 to 1985).

He received a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in 1981. Pocan went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1984.

He was admitted to practice in Wisconsin (1984) and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin (1984).

Pocan was nominated by President Joe Biden to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin on December 15, 2021. His nomination has been pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee since that time. On February 15, 2022, United States Senator Ron Johnson determined to block Pocan from receiving a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee by withholding his blue slip.
