Biography

The Hon. William F. Bloomer is an associate justice on the Massachusetts Superior Court. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Charlie Baker in 2023, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. John Lu.

Prior to his appointment, Bloomer was the director of Division of Standards for the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission, a position to which he was named in 2022. Before that, he spent time as an assistant United States attorney for the District of Massachusetts (2004 to 2022) as well as an assistant attorney general for the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office (1999 to 2004).

Bloomer earned a B.S. from Suffolk University in 1985. He then completed a J.D. at Suffolk University Law School in 1988. He was licensed to practice in Massachusetts (1988) and Rhode Island (1993).

After graduating from law school, Bloomer began his legal career as a judicial law clerk for the Rhode Island Supreme Court. He served in that capacity until 1989, at which time he entered into private practice at Shaheen, Cappiello, Stein & Gordo. Then, in 1990, he became an assistant district attorney with the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office.

His memberships have included the board of directors of the Watertown Boys & Girls Club. He has also been involved with the editorial board of the Massachusetts Law Review.
