Judge William B. Sullivan - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. William B. Sullivan is a Circuit Judge for the Illinois Circuit Court of Cook County. He was appointed to the bench by the Illinois Supreme Court on April 20, 2015, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Susan F. Zwick. Judge Sullivan is currently assigned to the Mortgage Foreclosure / Mechanics Lien Section of the Chancery Division (Calendar 60).

Sullivan earned a B.A. in Music and History from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1989 and completed his J.D. at the DePaul University College of Law in 1992. While at DePaul University, Sullivan was the founder and editor-in-chief of the DePaul Journal of Art, Technology, and Intellectual Property Law.

After being admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1992, Sullivan worked as a sole practitioner in his own private practice, where he handled real estate, estate planning, commercial litigation, personal injury, landlord-tenant disputes, and probate matters. For much of this time, Sullivan also worked as a licensed real estate broker and operated a real estate brokerage firm from 1998 to 2015, as well as working as an Adjunct Professor at DePaul University College of Law and as a Hearing Officer with the Illinois State Board of Elections.

His memberships have included the West Suburban Bar Association and the Arab American Bar Association. He has served on the Board of Governors of the West Suburban Bar Association, and he has volunteered for the Suburban Bar Coalition Judicial Screening Committee.

Sullivan was a vice-president of the Oak Park Area Council and president of the Oak Park Huskies Baseball Club and has been a member of the Board of Directors of L’Arche Chicago and the Oak Park Township Senior Services Committee.

Raised in Oak Park, Sullivan graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School in 1984. He serves as a cantor and lector at St. Catherine of Siena-St. Lucy Parish.

He is a registered Democrat.
