Biography

The Hon. William B. Sullivan is a judge on the Circuit Court of Cook County in Illinois. He was appointed to the bench by the Illinois Supreme Court on April 20, 2015, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Susan F. Zwick.

Over the course of his judicial career, Sullivan has held assignments in the Chancery Division.

Sullivan earned a B.A. in music and history from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1989. He then completed a J.D. at DePaul University College of Law in 1992. As a law student, he was the founding editor-in-chief of the DePaul Journal of Art, Technology & Intellectual Property Law.

He was licensed to practice in Illinois (1992).

After graduating from law school, Sullivan began his legal career as a sole practitioner in his own private practice. He worked in that capacity until his appointment to the bench, representing clients in real estate, probate administration, estate planning, personal injury, landlord-tenant, and commercial matters. Sullivan supplemented his practice with service as a hearing officer for the Illinois State Board of Elections.

His memberships have included the West Suburban Bar Association and the Arab American Bar Association. He has also been involved with the Suburban Bar Coalition, the Oak Park Huskies Baseball Club, and the Oak Park Area Arts Council, and he has served on the board of directors of L’Arche Chicago.

He is a recipient of the Special Achievement Award from the Arab American Bar Association of Illinois (2019) and the Court of Honor Award from Chicago Volunteer Legal Services (2024).

Raised in Oak Park, Illinois, Sullivan graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School. He attends St. Catherine of Siena-St. Lucy Parish. A licensed real estate broker, Sullivan operated his own real estate brokerage firm before assuming the bench.

He is registered as a Democrat.
