Judge William A. Viscovich - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. William A. Viscovich is a justice for the Queens County Supreme Court (Civil Term) in the Eleventh Judicial District of New York. Before his election to the bench in 2017, Viscovich served as a judge for the Civil Court of the City of New York in Queens County from 2008 to 2016.

Viscovich earned a B.A. from the State University of New York at Albany in 1983. He then completed a J.D. at Albany Law School in 1986.

After graduating from law school, Viscovich began his legal career as an assistant district attorney in the Office of the District Attorney of Bronx County in 1986. The following year, he transferred to the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor for the City of New York, where he served as an assistant special narcotics prosecutor for two years.

Then, in 1989, Viscovich entered into private practice as a sole practitioner. While in private practice, he also served as counsel to Assemblymember Nettie Mayersohn (1989 to 2001) as well as counsel to the Queens County Clerk (2001 to 2007). As counsel to Assemblymember Nettie Mayersohn, Viscovich helped write the state law that allows the victim of a violent crime to address the judge and recommend a sentencing.

His memberships have included the Columbian Lawyers Association, the Croatian American Bar Association, the Queens County Bar Association, the New York State AIDS Advisory Council, and Beyond AIDS. He has also served as a mentor for the Catholic Lawyers Guild and the Saint Mels Men’s Club.

He is registered as a Democrat.
