Biography

The Hon. Vito M. DeStefano is a justice on the Nassau County Supreme Court in the 10th Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the bench on November 6, 2007.

Over the course of his judicial career, DeStefano has served as the administrative judge of the Nassau County Supreme Court, and he has held assignments in the Commercial Division, the Matrimonial Part, the Civil Part, and the Tax Certiorari Part. Before that, he sat as a judge on the Nassau County District Court (2004 to 2007).

DeStefano earned a B.A. in philosophy and religious studies from Wagner College. He then completed a J.D. at Brooklyn Law School in 1996. He was licensed to practice in New York (1997).

After graduating from law school, DeStefano began his legal career as an appellate court attorney with the 2nd Judicial Department of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York. Then, in 1999, he entered into private practice, representing clients in insurance and appellate litigation as an associate at Wilson, Elser, Moskowitz, Edelman & Dicker.

His memberships have included the Advisory Committee on AI and the Courts, the Nassau County Equal Justice in the Courts Committee, the Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics, and the Committee on Standards of Attorney Conduct. He has also taught as an adjunct professor at Molloy College, Hofstra University, and Long Island University.

DeStefano was born in Brooklyn, New York, and attended Stuyvesant High School.

He is registered as a Republican.
