Judge Victoria A. Valentine: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Victoria A. Valentine is a judge for the Sixth Circuit Court of Michigan in Oakland County. She was elected to the bench in November 2016.

During her judicial tenure, Valentine has held an assignment over the Civil/Criminal and Family Divisions and the Oakland County Business Court, a position to which she was appointed by the Michigan Supreme Court in 2022.

Prior to her election, she handled civil litigation with a focus on complex commercial litigation as an attorney in private practice. In addition, Valentine served as a presenter on business litigation issues and provided client business litigation seminars, which she called “Valentine University.”

She received a B.S.B.A. from Central Michigan University in 1993. Valentine went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Detroit, Mercy School of Law in 1998.

She was admitted to practice in Michigan (1998), the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

Valentine was awarded the highest rating from Martindale-Hubbard as well as the 2011 Bar Register of Preeminent Women Lawyers.

Her memberships have included the Oakland County Bar Association (president and Board of Directors), the Oakland County Bar Foundation (trustee), and the Michigan Association for Justice Executive Board.

Valentine has sat on the Michigan State Bar Committee on Civil Procedure and Courts and the Constitutional Law Section and Real Estate Sub-Section. In addition, she served on the State Bar of Michigan Representative Assembly as well as the Oakland County Bar Association Circuit Court Committee (chair), Post-Bench/Bar Task Force Committee, Case Conference Pilot Program, Standard Protective Order Subcommittee, Legislative Review Subcommittee, Laches Subcommittee (chair), and Membership Committee.

She has been a mentor in the New Lawyers Pro Bono Program and an expert contributor to the Institute of Continuing Legal Education.

Valentine received the Phenomenal Women Award from the Junior League of Birmingham (2004) and a Certificate of Appreciation for Pro Bono Recognition from the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan (2001) and a Certificate of Appreciation for the Michigan High School Mock Trial Tournament, Detroit Regional (2011).
