Overview
The Hon. Victor G. Viramontes is an associate justice of the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, Division Eight[1]. Viramontes was appointed to that court by Governor Gavin Newsom in October 2022[1].
Before joining the appellate court, Viramontes served on the Los Angeles County Superior Court from 2017 to 2022[1]. He was appointed to that court by former Governor Jerry Brown on November 2, 2017, filling the vacancy created by the passing of Ralph W. Dau[2]. On the superior court, his assignments included juvenile dependency matters at the Edmund D. Edelman Children's Court[3]. In late 2021, while still serving on the superior court, he sat pro tem in Division Three of the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District[4].
Educational background
Viramontes earned a B.A. from Stanford University. At Yale Law School, he completed a J.D. in 1999[3]. After law school, Viramontes served as a law clerk to U.S. District Court Judge Carlos Moreno in Los Angeles from 1999 to 2000[3]. He was admitted to the State Bar of California (June 2001).
Career history
After completing his clerkship, Viramontes worked as an associate at Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe (2000 to 2001)[3]. In 2001, he joined the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) as a staff attorney and remained there until 2005[3]. During his years in civil-rights practice, his work included advocacy on behalf of young adults brought to the United States as children[3]. From 2005 to 2010, Viramontes served with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, first as a trial attorney and then as a senior trial attorney[3]. He returned to MALDEF in 2010 as national senior counsel and was serving in that role at the time of his judicial appointment[3].
Personal life
In 2017, Viramontes was 44 and lived in Whittier[2]. Viramontes is registered as a Democrat[1].
