Biography

The Hon. Valerie M. Cartright is a justice on the Suffolk County Supreme Court in the 10th Judicial District of New York. She was elected to the bench on November 3, 2020.

Prior to her election, Cartright was a sole practitioner in her own private practice, a law firm she opened in 2014. During her tenure there, she represented clients in civil rights, domestic relations, education, labor and employment, insurance, construction, and criminal law matters, supplementing her practice with service as a member of the Brookhaven Town Council.

Cartright earned a bachelor’s degree in international studies from West Virginia University in 1997. She then completed a J.D. at Touro College, Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center, in 2003. As a law student, she interned at Korman, Mandell & Henaff in Paris (2002) and clerked with the Hon. Arlene Lindsay of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York (2002).

She was licensed to practice in New Jersey (2003), New York (2004), and Florida (2006).

After graduating from law school, Cartright began her legal career as an associate at L'Abbate Balkan, Colavita & Contini. She worked in that capacity until 2005, at which time she joined the Law Office of J. Stewart Moore. Then, in 2007, she moved to the Law Offices of Frederick K. Brewington.

Her memberships have included the Nassau County Bar Association, the National Bar Association, the Amistad Long Island Black Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Suffolk County Bar Association, and the New York State Bar Association. She has also been involved with Judicial Friends and the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority.

She is registered as a Democrat.
