Judge Thomas W. Murphy - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Thomas W. Murphy is a judge for the Cook County Circuit Court in Illinois. He was elected to the Circuit Court in 2006 and was retained in subsequent elections.

While on the bench, Murphy has held an assignment in the Fifth Municipal District of the Municipal Department, where he has served as a supervising judge.

Murphy received a bachelor’s degree in history from Northern Illinois University. He went on to complete a J.D. at John Marshall Law School.

Prior to joining the bench, he was a sole practitioner in private practice and an alderman for Chicago’s 18th Ward (1991 to 2006). As a private practice attorney, Murphy specialized in personal injury, probate, real estate, and workers’ compensation matters. During his four terms as alderman, Murphy was credited with introducing an ordinance that sought to cross-train firefighters and paramedics in an effort to improve public safety.

He was admitted to practice law in Illinois in 1979.

Murphy, a married father of two, was born and raised on the Southwest Side of Chicago.
