The Hon. Thomas S. Kaplanes is an associate justice for the Dorchester Division of the Boston Municipal Court in Massachusetts. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Deval Patrick in 2013, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Robert P. Ziemian.
Kaplanes earned a bachelor’s degree from Providence College in 1990. He then completed a J.D. at Suffolk University Law School in 1999.
After graduating from law school, Kaplanes began his legal career as an assistant district attorney for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. He spent the next six years prosecuting gang violence and felonies in the Superior Court before entering into private practice. He started as an associate at Boyle, Morrissey & Campo, handling high exposure, complex personal injury cases as an insurance defense attorney. Then, in 2007, Kaplanes opened his own private practice as a sole practitioner, specializing in criminal defense and civil matters.
His memberships have included the Hellenic Bar Association and the Albanian American Law Society. He has also volunteered for the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans, the Dorchester Boys and Girls Club, and the Cambridge Special Olympics.
Kaplanes was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. He is fluent in Greek.
