Biography

The Hon. Thomas J. LaConte (Ret.) is a judge for the Passaic County Superior Court (Vicinage 11) in New Jersey. LaConte was appointed to the bench by former Governor Richard Codey in 2005. He retired in 2018.

Prior to his appointment, LaConte was a partner at Cole, Schotz, Meisel, Forman & Leonard in Hackensack, specializing in complex construction, corporate and commercial litigation in the state and federal courts. He supplemented his practice with service as a municipal attorney for the Borough of North Caldwell (1979 to 2005).

LaConte earned a bachelor’s degree from Lafayette College in 1970. He then completed a J.D. at Rutgers Law School in 1974.

His memberships have included the New Jersey State Bar Association, the Bergen County Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Passaic County Bar Association (president), the Passaic County Legal Aid Society (trustee), the Passaic County Ethics Committee (investigator), and the Robert L. Clifford American Inn of Court (master).

He was named Professional Lawyer of the Year by the New Jersey Commission on Professionalism in the Law (1998). He is also a recipient of the Volunteer Lawyers Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Service and Commitment to Public Interest Law from the Passaic County Legal Aid Society (1998).

LaConte was born in Paterson, New Jersey. He and his wife, Jo Ann (Candy) Zinn, were residents of Wayne at the time of his appointment.
