Judge Thomas J. Alevizos: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Hon. Thomas J. Alevizos is a judge for the La Porte County Circuit Court in Indiana. He was elected to the bench in 2006.

During his judicial tenure, Alevizos is credited with implementing the Graduated Sanctions and Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative Program and the La Porte County Drug Court.

Prior to joining the bench, he was in private practice and worked for eleven years as a deputy prosecutor with the La Porte County Prosecutor’s Office.

Alevizos also served as a representative in the Indiana House of Representatives (1992 to 1998) and was a city councilman for Michigan City. As a member of the House, he was chairman of the Judiciary and Rules Committees.

He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan. Alevizos went on to complete a J.D. at Valparaiso University School of Law. He was admitted to practice in Indiana in 1988.

Alevizos was a member of the Indiana Public Defenders Commission, the Indiana Judges Association Board of Governors, and the American Judges Association Board of Governors.

He has also been involved with the Boy Scouts (district chairman), the Dunebrook Board of Directors, the M.L. King Community Center, Michiana Industries, and the Washington Park Zoological Society.

Alevizos received the Distinguished Hoosier Award from the Indiana Department of Corrections in 2009.

A La Porte native, he attended Rogers High School. Growing up, he worked at his father’s gas station in Michigan City.
