Judge Thomas D. Buchanan: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Thomas D. Buchanan is a justice on the Schenectady County Supreme Court in the 4th Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the bench on November 6, 2012, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Vincent Reilly, Jr.

Prior to his election, Buchanan worked as an attorney in private practice at Hacker & Murphy in Latham, a legal practice he joined in 1998.

Buchanan earned a B.A. in political science and communications from the State University of New York at Albany in 1993. He then completed a J.D. at Albany Law School in 1998. He is licensed to practice in New York (1999).

His memberships have included the Justinian Honor Society, the Albany County Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and the Capital District Trial Lawyers Association. He also chaired the Schenectady County Republican Committee.

Buchanan was a resident of Rotterdam, New York, at the time of his election.

He is registered as a Republican.
