Judge Theresa M. Chernosky: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

The Hon. Theresa M. Chernosky is an associate judge for the Montgomery County Circuit Court in Maryland. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Larry Hogan on December 17, 2021.

Prior to her appointment, Chernosky worked for the Montgomery County Public Defender’s Office. She started as an assistant public defender in 2001, rising through the ranks to become a deputy district public defender in 2017.

Chernosky earned a bachelor’s degree in economics, mathematics, and French from Lake Forest College in 1992. She then completed a J.D. at Albany Law School in 1995. She is admitted to practice in Maryland (1995), Massachusetts (1995), and Kentucky (1996).

After graduating from law school, Chernosky began her legal career as an assistant public defender with the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy. She served in that capacity until 2001, at which time she relocated to Maryland.

Her memberships have included the Montgomery County Bar Association, the Women’s Bar Association of Maryland, and the American College of Trial Attorneys.

Born in Concord, Massachusetts, Chernosky attended Littleton High School in Littleton.
