Judge Theresa B. Doyle - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Theresa B. Doyle (Ret.) served as a judge for the King County Superior Court in Washington. Doyle was elected to the bench in 2004. She retired at the conclusion of her term in 2020.

Over the course of her judicial career, Doyle held assignments as the Assistant Chief Criminal Judge. She also presided over the Unified Family Court and the Drug Court as well as the civil and criminal trial calendars.

Prior to her election, Doyle sat as a judge for the Seattle Municipal Court, a position she held from 1998 to 2004. During this time, she presided over the new mental health court in the Seattle Municipal Court.

Doyle earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington. She then completed a J.D. at Seattle University School of Law.

After graduating from law school, Doyle completed a clerkship with the California First District Court of Appeal in San Francisco and the Washington Court of Appeal (Division I) in Seattle. She briefly worked as an associate at Riddell, Williams, Bullitt & Walkinshaw, but spent most of her legal career as an appellate public defender with the Washington Appellate Defender Association and the California Public Defenders Association.

Her memberships have included the Washington State Minority and Justice Commission, where she has chaired the Rules and Legislation Committee and the Juvenile Justice Committee. She also sat on the Washington State Interpreter Commission.

She was named Judge of the Year by the Washington State Attorneys for Justice (2016).

Doyle was raised in King County, where she attended Rainier Beach High School.
