Judge Tara Clark Newberry - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Tara Clark Newberry is a judge for the Eighth Judicial District Court in Clark County, Nevada. She was elected to the bench in the November 2020 general election.

Newberry received a B.S. in history and criminal justice from the University of Cincinnati in 1997. She went on to earn a J.D. from California Western School of Law in 2006.

After graduating from University, she worked as a police officer with the Cincinnati Police Department for seven years.

Upon obtaining her law degree, Newberry joined Alverson, Taylor, Mortensen & Sanders, where she practiced as a medical malpractice, insurance, and wrongful death defense attorney.

Then, in 2009, she joined Deaner, Deaner, Scann, Malan & Larsen, where her practice scope included civil litigation, real estate, title insurance defense, and bankruptcy. The following year, Newberry became a partner at the Clark Newberry Law Firm. During her ten-year-tenure there, she assisted homeowners and consumers in eliminating debt as well as enforcing their consumer rights. She remained in that capacity until her election to the bench.

Newberry served as a mediator for the State of Nevada Foreclosure Mediation Program (2009 to 2017) and the Successor Program administered by the Eighth Judicial District Court (since 2017). She also served as a mediator for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, District of Nevada (2015 to 2019).

Her pro bono work includes the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada and Nevada Legal Services.

Her memberships have included the National Association of Consumer Advocates, National Association of Bankruptcy Attorneys, National LGBT Bar Association, Clark County Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.
