Biography

The Hon. Tanya R. Kennedy is a Justice of the New York County Supreme Court, Civil Term in the First Judicial District of New York. She was elected to the Supreme Court bench in 2015.

Before her election to the Supreme Court, Justice Kennedy served as a judge for the New York County Civil Court after being elected to the post in 2006. During her tenure on the Civil Court bench, she was appointed to serve as an Acting Justice of the New York County Supreme Court in 2012 and as the supervising judge of the New York County Civil Court in 2014.

She is a registered Democrat.

Justice Kennedy received her B.A. from Pennsylvania State University in 1989. She went on to earn a J.D. from Yeshiva University, Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in 1992.

After graduating from law school, Kennedy joined the New York City Law Department’s Office of the Corporation Counsel. She served for seven years as an assistant corporation counsel and held assignments in both the Bronx Family Court as well as the Bronx Tort Division. Then, in 1997, she was promoted to serve as deputy assistant chief while she was assigned to the Tort Division. She remained in that capacity for two years.

In 1999, after leaving the Law Department, Kennedy then joined the New York State Unified Court System as a principal law clerk. She worked in that capacity for the Hon. Barry A. Cozier during his tenure as both a Justice of the New York County Supreme Court, Commercial Division (1999 to 2001) and Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department (2001 to 2005). Kennedy remained with Justice Cozier until her election to the Civil Court bench.

Kennedy has also taught as an adjunct professor at Fordham University School of Law.

Her memberships include the New York City Bar Association, the Metropolitan Black Bar Association, the Association of Black Women Attorneys, the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law Alumni Association, and the NAACP Mid-Manhattan Branch. She has also served as a past president of the National Association of Women Judges.
