Judge Sydney B. Hewlett - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Sydney B. Hewlett is a judge for the 18th District Court of Texas in Johnson County. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Greg Abbott on March 11, 2019. At the time of her appointment, she became the first woman to serve on a district court in Johnson County.

Hewlett earned a B.A. in English from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1994. Then, in 1997, she completed a J.D. at Baylor University School of Law.

After graduating from law school, Hewlett began her legal career as a law clerk for the Hon. Terry R. Means (Ret.) of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas. Two years later, she entered into private practice. She first joined Shannon, Gracey, Ratliff & Miller as an associate, quickly rising through the ranks to become a partner. During her time there, she specialized in family, business, insurance, patent, and real estate matters. She then started her own private practice in 2014.

Her memberships have included the Johnson County Bar Association, the Tarrant County Bar Association, the Texas Bar Foundation, and the Cleburne Economic Development Foundation. She has sat on the Board of Directors of the Fort Worth Business Assistance Center. She has also served as chairperson of the Cleburne Building and Standards Commission and chair of the Polly Guthrie Memorial Scholarship.

Her husband, Justin Hewlett, has served as mayor of the City of Cleburne. They worship at Granbury Street Church of Christ.

She is registered as a Republican.
