Judge Steve Kim - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Steve Kim is a U.S. Magistrate Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, Western Division. He was appointed to the District Court in 2016. He filled the seat vacated by the retirement of the Hon. Carla M. Woehrle (Ret.).

Judge Kim graduated with his B.A. in Letters from the University of Oklahoma. He went on to earn his J.D. magna cum laude from the Georgetown University Law Center. While in law school, Kim was a member of the Order of the Coif honor society and served on the law review.

After graduating from law school, Kim began a clerkship with the Hon. Sidney R. Thomas with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He also clerked for the Hon. Stephen V. Wilson, Justice of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Upon completing his clerkships, Kim joined Munger, Tolles, and Olson LLP as a civil litigator.

Kim then left Munger Tolles to become an assistant U.S. Attorney with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California, where he was assigned to the Criminal Division. During his tenure there, he helped prosecute cases involving violent and white-collar crimes as well as immigration offenses and drug trafficking cases. He also specialized in computer crimes, identity theft, and intellectual property crimes.

Then, in 2007, Kim re-entered private practice to become the regional managing director at Stroz Friedberg LLC, where he was responsible for overseeing the firm's three West Coast offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. In that capacity, Kim counseled law firms, corporations, and government agencies on issues involving cybersecurity, data privacy, digital forensics, and digital risk assessments. He remained there until his appointment to the District Court in 2016.
