Judge Stephenie K. Gookins: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Stephenie K. Gookins is a judge for the Hamilton County Superior Court in Indiana. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Eric Holcomb on August 9, 2022, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Gail Bardach.

Prior to her appointment, Gookins was a partner at Terry & Gookins, a law firm she opened in 2016. Before that, she spent time as an associate at Holt, Fleck & Romine (1998 to 2004) as well as Campbell Kyle Proffitt (2004 to 2016), specializing in criminal defense, appellate, and family law matters. Gookins supplemented her practice with service as a public defender for the Hamilton County Public Defender’s Office.

Gookins earned a bachelor’s degree in public affairs from Indiana University in 1994. She then completed a J.D. at Indiana University, Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 1998.

Her memberships have included the Hamilton County Bar Association and the Indiana State Bar Association. She has also been involved with the Hamilton County Community Corrections Advisory Board.

Raised on a farm in Osgood, Indiana, Gookins has resided in Washington Township since 2003. She and her husband, Tom, have one son. When not presiding over legal proceedings, she enjoys attending sporting events, gardening, yard work, four-wheeling, and spending time with her family.

She is registered as a Republican.
