Biography

The Hon. Stephen I. Goorvitch is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Jerry Brown in November of 2015. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. James A. Steele (Ret.).

He is a registered Democrat.

Judge Goorvitch received his B.A. from the University of California, San Diego in 1994. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 1998.

After graduating from law school, Goorvitch became a staff attorney at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's Division of Enforcement, where he practiced from 1998 to 2001. He then entered into a clerkship with the Hon. Nora M. Manella with the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Calfornia. He also clerked for the Hon. Rosemary S. Pooler with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 2002 to 2003. After completing his clerkships, Goorvitch joined the law firm of O'Melveny and Myers LLP where he served as counsel from 2003 to 2007.

Goorvitch left the private sector in 2007 to join the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California as an assistant U.S. attorney. He served as a federal prosecutor for the DOJ until his appointment to the Superior Court in 2015.
