Judge Stephen E. Brown - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Stephen E. Brown (Ret.) was a judge for the Grays Harbor County Superior Court in Washington. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Jay Inslee in October 2014 to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Gordon L. Godfrey (Ret.). Brown retired in January 2021.

At the time of his appointment, he was a judge for the Grays Harbor County District Court, a position to which he was elected in 1986. During his tenure there, Brown is credited with working with the county commissioners to implement a mandatory mediation program in District Court in an effort to reduce cases seen by judges and to encourage a more cohesive collaboration between parties. In addition, he held an assignment on the Therapeutic Drug Court and presided over National Adoption Day proceedings in Grays Harbor County.

His judicial career also includes sitting as a judge for the Elma Municipal Court after being appointed to the position in 1984.

Brown received a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Washington School of Law.

After law school, Brown began his legal career as a deputy prosecuting attorney with the Grays Harbor County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office in 1980.

His civic involvement included acting as a volunteer with the Elma McCleary Lions Club and as a past president of the Elma McCleary Youth Soccer Association.

Brown graduated from Elma High School.
