Biography

Hon. Stephanie A. Charter is a judge for the Eighth Judicial District Court in Clark County, Nevada. She was elected to the bench in the November 2020 general election.

Charter received a B.A. in political science from South Dakota State University in 1988. She went on to earn a J.D. from Creighton University School of Law in 1991.

Her legal career includes serving as a civil litigator and prosecutor. Charter was the first dedicated children’s attorney with the Children’s Attorney’s Project of Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, where she is credited with starting the Nevada Chapter of the National Association of Counsel for Children.

In addition to her work there, she also practiced medical malpractice, products liability, and premises liability at firms in Orange County, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada. Just prior to her election to the bench, Charter was serving as of counsel at Thorndal, Armstrong, Delk Balkenbush & Eisinger.

In the public sector, she worked as a prosecutor with both the Washoe County and Clark County District Attorney’s Offices. As such, she helped prosecute parents in abuse and neglect cases. During her tenure with the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office, Charter spearheaded the effort to start the Truancy Diversion Program with the Washoe County School District. Later, she served as a volunteer judge with the program in Clark County.

While on the bench, Charter has presided on the Family Court.

Away from the bench, she enjoys hiking and spending time with her three dogs. Charter is married and has three children.
