Biography

The Hon. Stephan R. Futrell is a judge for the Richmond County Superior Court in the 16A Judicial District of the 3rd Division in North Carolina. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Roy Cooper in 2018, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Richard Brown.

Prior to his appointment, Futrell was the County Attorney for Richmond County. Before that, he spent time as a partner at Kitchin, Neal, Webb, Webb & Futrell as well as a city attorney for the City of Hamlet.

Futrell earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and government from Wake Forest University in 1978. He then completed a J.D. at Georgetown University Law Center in 1981.

He is registered as a Democrat.
