Judge Sidney A. Butcher - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Sidney A. Butcher is an associate judge for the Anne Arundel County District Court in Maryland. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Larry Hogan on January 4, 2019.

Prior to his appointment, Butcher was an assistant attorney general in the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General, a position to which he was named in 2018.

Butcher earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Florida A&M University. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Kansas School of Law. He was admitted to the State Bar of Maryland in 2007.

After graduating from law school, Butcher began his legal career as a prosecutor for the Baltimore City Office of the State’s Attorney. He served in that capacity for eight years, eventually leaving to become of counsel in the White-Collar Group at Whiteford, Taylor & Preston.

His memberships have included the Maryland State Bar Association and the Harford County Bar Association. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Legal Services Corporation and the Board of Education of Anne Arundel County.

He is a recipient of the Elijah E. Cummings Award from Anne Arundel County (2021).

Butcher resides in Hanover, Maryland, with his wife and daughter. They attend St. Lawrence Martyr Catholic Parish.
