Biography

The Hon. Sherry Klein Heitler (Ret.) was a Justice of the New York County Supreme Court in the First Judicial District of New York. She was originally elected to the Supreme Court bench in 2001 and was subsequently certificated to the seat in 2015. Heitler retired from the bench that same year after reaching the State’s mandatory retirement age.

Her judicial career began in 1994, at which time she was elected to serve as a judge for the New York County Civil Court. Heitler held that post until being appointed to serve as an Acting Justice of the New York County Supreme Court in 1996. She remained an Acting Justice until being elected to the same court in 2001.

During her tenure on the Supreme Court bench, Heitler was appointed to serve as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division, First Judicial Department in 2007 and also served as the Administrative Judge of Civil Matters for the First Judicial District from 2009 to 2015.

After her retirement, Heitler was appointed to serve as the Chief of Policy and Planning for the New York State Unified Court System by the Hon. A. Gail Prudenti, former Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York. In that role, she was responsible for overseeing the management of New York’s problem-solving courts.

She graduated with her B.A. in English from the City University of New York at Hunter College in 1965. She also obtained her M.A. in communications from New York University in 1966 and went on to earn her J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in 1976.

Heitler began her legal career as a law assistant with the New York County Civil Court in 1977.

Two years later, she entered into private practice, becoming a founding partner of the law firm Heitler and Levy, P.C., where she would remain until her election to the Civil Court in 1994.

She also taught as an adjunct professor of law at the City University of New York at Baruch College from 1981 to 1985.

While on the bench, Heitler was assigned to the Court’s Center for Complex Litigation in 2008 where she was tasked with administering all New York City Asbestos Litigation cases.

Her memberships have included the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the National Association of Women Judges, the Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert, and the New York County Lawyers’ Association. Heitler also served as director of the New York County Women’s Bar Association, the Jewish Lawyers Guild, and the Metropolitan Women's Bar Association.
