Judge Sherry A. Hartzler: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Sherry A. Hartzler is a magistrate for the Allen County Superior Court in Indiana. She was appointed to the bench in April 2015.

Hartzler has held an assignment in the Family Relations Division and was instrumental in establishing the Court’s Family Recovery Court, which she also presides over.

Prior to her appointment, she was an attorney at Van Gilder & Trzynka, P.C. (2010 to 2015). She began her legal career as an associate in the firm but left in 2006 to work for four years as chief legal counsel for the Allen County Office of Family and Children (2006 to 2010).

Hartzler received a B.S. in public administration from Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne in 1999. She went on to complete a J.D. at Valparaiso University School of Law in 2002. Hartzler was admitted to practice in Indiana (2003), the United States District Court for the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

Her memberships have included the Indiana Counsel and National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the National Association of Drug Court Professionals, and the Allen County Bar Association. Hartzler also sat as a member of the Indiana Juvenile Benchbook Committee and the Healthier Moms and Babies Board of Directors.

She has been a presenter for continuing legal education seminars, including the Annual CHINS Law & Procedures Seminar and the Allen County Bar Association. In addition, Hartzler served as a volunteer for the Indiana Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program, to help judges, attorneys, and law students who are experiencing various hardships in their lives.

She was raised in Markle, Indiana, and later moved to Fort Wayne with her husband and daughter.
