Biography

Overview

The Hon. Shelly A. Seymour (Ret.) was a judge for the Merced County Superior Court in California[1]. Seymour was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown on October 11, 2018, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Harry L. Jacobs[2]. She retired in February 2025[1].

While on the bench, her assignments included family law matters[3]. From 2020 to 2021, Seymour served as presiding judge of the Merced County Civil Grand Jury[4].

Educational background

Seymour earned a B.A. in accounting and political science from Loras College. At the University of Iowa College of Law, she completed a J.D. in 1986. She was admitted to the State Bar of California (June 1989).

Career history

After completing law school, Seymour began her legal career in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as an associate at Dumbaugh and Childers PC (1986 to 1988)[3]. Her work there included bankruptcy matters tied to farm reorganizations during the 1980s farm crisis[3]. Two years later, she relocated to California and worked as a law clerk at Cyril Lawrence Inc. (1988 to 1989)[3]. Following her admission to the State Bar of California, Seymour joined Canelo, Hansen and Wilson as an associate (1989 to 1997)[3].

In 1997, Seymour opened a sole practice in Merced and handled family law matters[3]. She moved to the Merced County Superior Court in 2008 as a facilitator and self-help attorney, a role she held until 2013[3]. Alongside that work, she served as a family law commissioner for the Mariposa County Superior Court (2012 to 2014) before becoming a family law commissioner for the Merced County Superior Court (2014 to 2018)[3].

Personal life

An Iowa native, Seymour spent most of her legal career in Merced County[3].

Seymour is registered as a Democrat[3].
