Judge Sharon I. Hamilton: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Sharon I. Hamilton is a judge for the Monroe County Court in Florida. She was elected to the bench in 2016.

Hamilton has presided over all county court cases in the Plantation Key Division and served as an acting circuit judge for dependency, family, domestic violence, and probate matters.

Prior to her election, she spent ten years as a general magistrate (2005 to 2015) for the 16th Judicial Circuit Court. Hamilton also worked as a private practice attorney in Monroe County since 1989 and served as general counsel and the director of Judicial Case Management for the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit. In private practice, she handled family, civil, criminal, juvenile, dependency, mental health, and probate issues at the county and circuit levels.

Hamilton received a B.A. from Flagler College in 1985. She went on to complete a J.D. at Nova Southeastern University, Shepard Broad College of Law, in 1988.

Hamilton was a member of the Monroe County Community Based Care Board and the Sixteenth Circuit Juvenile Justice Advisory Board as well as the Dade County Community Based Care Board. She also served as the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit representative for the Committee on Professionalism and as a member of the American Business Women’s Association.

She was born in Miami, Florida. Hamilton and her brother were raised by a single mother, who made ends meet by working in Miami as an administrative assistant at the Copa Cabana and later opened a children’s clothing store in the Hollywood Mall. Her husband, Michael Crimella, is also an attorney.
