Judge Shana Frost Matini - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Shana Frost Matini is an associate judge for the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. She was nominated to the bench by former President Donald Trump in February 2018. Matini was confirmed by the United States Senate on August 1, 2019.

Prior to her nomination, she presided as a magistrate judge on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia since her appointment by former Chief Judge Lee Satterfield in 2016.

Prior to beginning her judicial career, she was an assistant attorney general in the Civil Litigation Division of the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia. Matini served as lead counsel in cases brought against the District and defended it and its employees in various cases involving allegations of constitutional violations along with common law torts and statutory violations.

Before joining the office, she handled the federal RICO lawsuit brought against the tobacco industry by the United States government as a special master to the Hon. Richard Levie and was a senior legal fellow for the Einstein Institute for Science, Health and the Courts.

Matini received a B.A. in international affairs from George Washington University. She taught English at the Language Teachers Training College in Słupsk, Poland, before completing a J.D. at the District of Columbia School of Law. While a law student, Matini sat as Editor-in-Chief of the District of Columbia Law Review.

After graduating from law school, she began her legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Richard A. Levie with the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

Matini and her husband, Dr. Ali Matini, have one daughter.
