Biography

The Hon. Serena R. Murillo is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. She was elected to the bench in June 2014 after an unsuccessful bid for a judicial position in 2008. She filled the vacancy created when the Hon. Daniel Lopez did not seek reelection.

Judge Murillo received her B.A. from the University of California, San Diego, after briefly attending Brown University. She went on to earn her J.D. from Loyola Law School in 1996.

After graduating from law school, Murillo worked as an attorney for the Los Angeles civil litigation firm McNicholas and McNicholas, where she practiced for eleven months.

Then, in 1997, after a hiring freeze was lifted at the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Murillo joined the office as a deputy district attorney. During her 17 years with the D.A.'s office, Murillo would serve as a prosecutor in the juvenile court and for misdemeanor trials. She would also have assignments in the Central Trials, and Major Fraud Divisions. Murillo handled gang and domestic violence homicide cases, as well as prosecuted cases in the California Supreme Court and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal. She remained with the D.A.'s office until being elected to the Superior Court in 2014.

During the 2008 judicial contest, it was alleged that Murillo's opponent, then-Los Angeles County court commissioner Harvey Silberman offered her a bribe to drop out of the race. He was indicted on bribery charges, which were later dropped. The Hon. Harvey Silberman ultimately won the election.

In 2016, Judge Murillo hosted a mock trial for fifth graders from a local elementary school. She initiated the program in an effort to teach students about the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights as well as the judicial process. The defendant in the mock trial was the famed literary character, Harry Potter, who was later found not guilty of his proposed crime.

Judge Murillo, who was born in Pomona, is a high school basketball champion and also played collegiate basketball.

Her husband, the Hon. Christina Gullon was serving as a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge at the time of her election to the bench.
