Judge Scott N. Freeman: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Scott N. Freeman is a judge for the Second Judicial District Court in Washoe County, Nevada. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Brian Sandoval in 2012 and retained his seat in 2014.

Freeman received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Ithaca College. He went on to earn a J.D. from Southwestern University School of Law.

He began his legal career in private practice in 1984, where he became a partner at Houston and Freeman. In 1994, he entered into solo practice with an emphasis on criminal defense.

In concurrence with his law practice, Freeman was appointed to serve as a Pro Tem Family Court Master and Pro Tem Juvenile Court Master by the Second Judicial District Court in 1993. Two years later, he received an appointment to the Reno Municipal Court to serve as a judge pro tem there. He held that position until his appointment to the bench.

He has also taught as a Criminal Justice instructor at the University of Nevada, Reno.

While on the bench, Freeman was elected to serve as the Second Judicial District Court Chief Judge in 2017 and re-elected to the position in 2017.

Some of his committee memberships have included the Washoe County Public Defender Selection Committee, Washoe County Alternative Public Defender Selection Committee, Nevada Criminal Jury Instructions Committee, Washoe District Court Pattern Criminal Jury Instructions Committee, Washoe District Court Criminal Rules Committee, and the Nevada Mandatory Sentencing Review Commission.

He has also served as a permanent member on the Commission for Judicial Selection and was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Nevada Law Foundation.

Some of his civic contributions have included serving as a member of the Rotary Club of Reno Sunrise, the Board of Trustees for the Children’s Cabinet, the Reno Rodeo Association, Director of Security for the Barracuda Golf Championship, and was active with the International Special Olympics.

In his spare time, Freemen co-hosted a weekly television show “Lawyers, Guns & Money” on a local network affiliate. The show's premise centered around conducting interviews with a variety of personalities in the legal, cultural, and charitable community.

He is a long-time resident of Northern Nevada. His hobbies include playing recreational ice hockey and long-distance bicycle riding. He is married and has two children.
