Hon. Scott D. Peterson is a circuit justice for Region 2 of the Massachusetts District Court. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Charlie Baker in 2017.
As a circuit justice of Region 2, Peterson has presided in the Quincy and Taunton District Courts. The Region also consists of the Attleboro, Brockton, Brookline, Dedham, Hingham, Stoughton, and Wrentham District Courts.
Peterson attended Boston College, where he received a B.A. in political science in 1983. He went on to complete a J.D. at Suffolk University Law School in 1986.
He began his legal career as an associate at Healy & Healy, P.C. and was later named a principal of the firm in 1995. Peterson continued to practice there until joining Foley & Foley, P.C. in 2007, where he managed the firm’s Litigation Practice Group and Hingham office.
Then, in 2013, Peterson opened his own private practice, working as a sole practitioner until his appointment to the bench in 2017. During that time, he litigated and tried cases before the Massachusetts Superior and District Court Departments as well as before the United States District Court. Peterson also defended and prosecuted appeals before the Supreme Judicial Court and Appeals Court. His areas of practice included personal injury, property damage claims, commercial disputes, insurance disputes, real estate conveyances, and employment issues.
His memberships included the Plymouth County Bar Association (president), the Massachusetts Bar Association, and the Boston Bar Association.
Peterson also served on the Board of Directors of the Hingham Rotary Club and was appointed by former Governor Jane Swift to serve as the Public Member and Secretary of the Board of Registration in Optometry. He was later reappointed to the Board by former Governor Deval Patrick in 2010.
Peterson was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. At the time of his appointment, he resided in Hingham.
