Biography

The Hon. Roy R. Hemphill is a master-in-equity for the Abbeville County Equity Court in South Carolina. He was appointed to the bench in 2019.

Hemphill is also a partner at McDonald, Patrick, Poston, Hemphill & Roper, LLC, where he began his legal career. His areas of practice include civil litigation, insurance, professional negligence defense, workers’ compensation, foreclosure and debt collections, and government and administrative law.

Hemphill received a B.S. in business administration from The Citadel in 1987. He then completed a J.D. at the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1990.

His memberships include the Greenwood County Bar Association, the South Carolina Bar, the Occupational Health and Safety Review Board, and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association.

He was a member of the Greenwood County School District 50 Board of Trustees and has been involved with the Greenwood YMCA, the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, Hospice Care of the Piedmont, and Upper Savannah Land Trust.

Hemphill was born in Chester, South Carolina, where he graduated from Chester High School. He and his wife, Lynn, have five children. They attend First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood.
