Judge Rosemarie E. Aquilina: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Rosemarie E. Aquilina is a judge for the Thirtieth Circuit Court of Michigan in Ingham County. She was elected to the bench in November 2008.

On the Circuit Court, Aquilina has presided in the General Trial Division. Prior to her election, she was a judge for the Fifty-Fifth District Court, a position to which she was elected in 2004. During her tenure there, Aquilina served as Chief Judge and presided over the Sobriety Court.

Prior to joining the bench, she managed her own private practice, the Aquilina Law Firm, PLC, and was a partner alongside Senator John F. Kelly at Strategic Governmental Consultants, PLLC. Aquilina started with Senator Kelly as his administrative assistant and campaign manager, a position she held for ten years.

In addition to her practice, she hosted the syndicated radio talk show, “Ask the Family Lawyer.”

Aquilina has taught Family Law, Advanced Trial Practice-Family Law, Legislative Process, Defending Battered Women, Animal Law, Child Abuse and Neglect, Elder Law, and Military Law as an adjunct professor at Western Michigan University, Thomas M. Cooley Law School. In addition, she was an adjunct professor in the Feiger Trial Practice Institute at Michigan State University of Law, where she taught Criminal Trial Practice, Civil Trial Practice, Trial Practicum, Criminal Law, and Criminal Procedure.

Aquilina received a B.A. in English and journalism from Michigan State University in 1979. She went on to complete a J.D. at Western Michigan University, Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 1984.

She is the recipient of the Griffen Award for Teaching Excellence from Cooley Law School and the Adjunct Faculty Award from Michigan State University.

Aquilina served as a member of the Judge Advocate General’s Corps in the Michigan Army National Guard, retiring after twenty years of service. She held the rank of Major.

She was born in Munich, Germany, and moved to the United States with her family in 1959. She has five children and two grandchildren. Aquilina resides in East Lansing, Michigan.
