Judge Ronald E. Bookbinder: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Ronald E. Bookbinder (Ret.) was the assignment judge for the Vicinage 3 Superior Court in Burlington County in New Jersey. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jim Florio in 1990 and reappointed for tenure in 1997. Bookbinder retired on July 1, 2019.

He was named the assignment judge of the Burlington Vicinage in 2008 by the Hon. Stuart Rabner, Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. Over the course of his judicial career, Bookbinder held assignments in the Criminal Division (1990 to 1992), Family Division (1992 to 1995), Civil Division (1995 to 2002), and General Equity Division (2002 to 2008) in Burlington County. He also held a temporary assignment in the Criminal Division from June to August in 2009.

Bookbinder received a B.A. from Colgate University. He went on to complete a J.D. at The George Washington University Law School in 1974.

Prior to joining the judiciary, Bookbinder was an attorney in the Burlington law firm of Guest & Domzalski (1983 to 1990). Before that, was an attorney at Bookbinder & Guest (1982) and worked for one year as a sole practitioner in his own private practice (1981 to 1982). Bookbinder also practiced as an attorney at Colaguori & Bookbinder (1976 to 1981) and as an associate alongside Sydney W. Bookbinder (1974 to 1976).

In addition to his work in the private sector, he acted as a public defender for the City of Burlington and as an attorney and prosecutor for several townships. As such, he was the Planning Board attorney for Burlington Township and the prosecutor for Palmyra Township and Pemberton Township.

Bookbinder also provided legal advice to the Mount Laurel Utilities Authority, Pemberton Township Utilities Authority, Pemberton Township Planning Board, Delran Planning Board, Eastampton Planning Board, Wrightstown Planning Board, Riverside Zoning Board, Wrightstown Zoning Board, Mount Holly Zoning Board, Hainesport Zoning Board, Beverly Zoning Board, Edgewater Park Zoning Board, and Bordentown Utilities Authority.

As an active member of the Democratic Party, he served as a former member of the Democratic Committee and the Democratic Chairman (1981 to 1986).

A graduate of Burlington Township High School, Bookbinder had resided in Moorestown since 1990.
