Biography

The Hon. Robin K. Sheares is an Acting Justice of the Kings County Supreme Court (Civil Term) in the Second Judicial District of New York.

Sheares began her judicial career as a judge for the Civil Court of the City of New York in Kings County, a position to which she was elected in 2008. Later that year, she was designated to the Family Court of the City of New York in Kings County by Chief Administrative Judge Ann Pfau. After her re-election to the Civil Court of the City of New York in 2017, Sheares was designated to the Kings County Supreme Court.

Before her election to the bench, Sheares served as a court attorney for the Civil Court of the City of New York from 1986 to 1996. She then moved to the New York State Supreme Court, where she served as a law clerk until 2007.

From 1991 to 1999, Sheares served as an Administrative Law Judge for the New York City Department of Finance.

Sheares earned a B.A. in political science from Ithaca College in 1983. Then, in 1986, she completed a J.D. at St. John’s University School of Law.

Her memberships have included the Black History Month Committee and the Civil Court Gender Committee. She has also participated with the Brownstoners of Bedford Stuyvesant, Church Women United, and the National Council of Negro Women.

Born in Harlem and raised in Brooklyn and Bedford-Stuyvesant, Sheares graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School. She is nicknamed the “Community Judge,” a designation she has received for her participation in outreach programs to help the public learn about the court system. Sheares also played an instrumental role in preventing the shutdown of the Summer Youth Employment Program.

She is registered as a Democrat.
