Judge Robert G. Main, Jr. - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Robert G. Main, Jr. is a judge for the Franklin County Court Multi-Bench in the Fourth Judicial District of New York. The Multi-Bench in Franklin County consists of its County, Family, and Surrogate’s Courts. He was first elected to the bench in 1988 and was re-elected in 2015. In 1997, Judge Main was designated to serve as an Acting Justice of the Franklin County Supreme Court.

He graduated with his A.B. in political science from Middlebury College in 1973. Main went on to earn a J.D. from Albany Law School in 1976.

After graduating from law school, he entered into private practice, joining the law firm Mullarney and Holland, where he worked as an associate until 1980. It was at that time, Main became a partner at Holland and Main, P.C. He continued to practice there until his election to the bench in 1988.

While on the bench, Judge Main has presided over the Franklin County Integrated Domestic Violence Part.

He has served as a trustee of the Alice Hyde Hospital Association, the Malone Cemetery Association, and of the Scholarship Committee of the Academic Board of Trustees of Franklin Academy. He was also a past president of the Farrar Home.

His memberships have included the Franklin County Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the New York State Surrogate’s Association, the Franklin County Judges Association, the County Judges Association, the Family Court Judges Association, and the Acting Supreme Court Judges Association.

Judge Main’s father, the late Hon. Robert G. Main, was a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court and also served as a New York State Assemblyman.
